Village Crier is located in the heart of downtown Dutton just south of highway 401 on Currie Rd. between Mary Street and Shackleton Street, across from Century 21 and the gas station. Street parking is within easy walking distance. . . .and not a parking meter in sight. The entrance way is wheelchair accessible to accommodate Jenny on her scooter and all her mobility challenged guests. In the growing season there are lovely planters of colourful blooms up and down the commercial district along with several benches. Rest awhile and visit with some of our friendly citizens.
Check out the many small owner operated shops and our four restaurants all located in Downtown Dutton.
Take time to browse the new – extensively renovated – showroom that is one of the area’s most interesting art galleries. Discover watercolour, acrylic and mixed media original paintings of historical, picturesque Elgin County and its rich rural landscape.
Florals are to be seen in their vibrant hues everywhere, no matter what the weather or time of year. Catch glimpses of bygone days at Wallacetown Fair and the county plowing matches. Jenny’s art is not limited to one particular theme but rather the beauty she sees all around her.
Talk to the artist/owner Jenny Phillips. She has a story to tell about each painting and includes that tale on a personal note attached to the back dust cover or in the package with the matted, unframed originals and prints.
Jenny is a local historian, cartoonist and author. Her husband David is the official town crier for the County of Elgin and together they have offered custom framing to the community for the last eighteen years and look forward to the next few decades in continuing that service.
The showroom/gallery is spacious, bright, relaxed, yet professional and cozy. The atmosphere is enhanced by the exposed century old brick wall, the copper-coloured reproduction tin ceiling and the earthy tones of the surrounding walls and the pine plank flooring.
The lighting is quite innovative, economical and “earth friendly”. The availability of custom tin ceilings; custom stained glass lighting, fireplace screens and windows makes this shop truly one-of-a-kind.
Both Jenny and Dave are people worth meeting.
If you are coming any distance, call ahead. The shop hours are 9am – 5:30pm or by appointment but if the weather is good and Jenny needs to research a story or a painting . . . they could be away for a short while. They live in an apartment over the store, so it is not a problem for an after hour appointment.
Dave is happy with twenty-four hour or more notice if you would like a special greeting cry for visiting friends and relatives. He will dress in his Elgin County tartan kilt and do a personalized cry on the side walk in front of the shop. You could send or phone any special information or greeting as a surprise for your guest
Jenny is happy to accept commissions for paintings of your home, farm, business, garden, livestock, pet or children at play. Talk over your ideas with her and if she has the time she will do what she can.
Whatever you do when you visit, you are certain to have a memorable visit.
